When it comes to disability, society is often oblivious to the struggle many people face. Despite the progression and modernisation disabled peoples private lives have undergone in the aftermath of political and medical progress, there has been no evolution of their public image (Riley, 2005). This is undoubtedly been a result of the misrepresentation of disability in the media, regardless of the fact as many as one in every five people in the world is disabled (Riley, 2005). There are few examples of disability being represented in various forms of media, using television as an example far too many productions promote stereotypes and myths that society contentedly accept, perhaps ad a result of lack of education. Social model thinking mandates barrier removal, independent living and other responses to social oppression, (Davis, 1997). This representation of disability is differs slightly from others in films and fiction stories because it touches on the struggle of the impaired person and looks at how adaptations can promote inclusion, other than that there is the typical, common stereotyping that occurs in most productions. Stereotyping in the media most likely occurs because the general public are not aware of the issues surrounding disability so might not recognise disability if presented in its real form. The Chivalric code is a clutter of rules that contradict each other and challenge normal human behavior. In the poem, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Sir Gawain proves to be a hero because he continually struggles against his human flaws to act in a heroic manner. Sir Gawain is acknowledged as a chivalric human because he is a courageous man who perseveres through difficult events and faces both human temptation and terror. Throughout Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Gawain constantly battles to uphold the chivalric code, and in the end one can determine that Gawain did in fact uphold the chivalric code. To begin, Gawain upholds the law to be a courageous man in all circumstances. Near the end of the poem Gawain reaches the Green Knight’s castle to uphold his promise that they made a year and a day before. When Gawain arrives, he and the knight begin conversation and form an agreement to follow through with the terms. As the Green Knight describes what he shall do, Gawain says, â€Å"Never fear†¦ I’ll stand still and allow you to work as you like and not oppose/ you here† (91-95). At this point within the poem, Gawain has done everything to follow the code of chivalry. True bravery and courage is not found in many men, but Gawain is able to conquer this obstacle and prove that he is brave. In this instance, Gawain is allowing the knight to do as he pleases, which is to cut off his head. This demonstrates that he is a fearless man awaiting his death. Additionally, he does not choose to resist the punishment and run for his life, he takes in the punishment because he has the strength to accept his fate. Many men in this situation could not demonstrate this action, allowing the reader to conclude that Gawain has a strong sense of bravery, which is an important and crucial characteristic needed to uphold the chivalric code. As the story progresses, so does Gawain following and upholding the Chivalric code. The code, furthermore, includes such as acts of honor and noble behavior towards women. After the Green Knight has given his punishment to Gawain, he speaks words of truth to him saying, â€Å"A man who’s true to his word should have nothing to fear† (195-196). The Knight know that Gawain did nothing wrong the first two days, because he returned what he had received. Since he did not try to take her seductive kisses to the next level while being chaste towards the mistress, shows that he respects women. Respect and love towards women is an important contribution to the chivalric code. Furthermore, the demonstration of returning what was received for the two of the days shows that Sir Gawain was an honorable man to his host, by staying true to his vows exchanged three days earlier. Overall, Sir Gawain is shown to maintain the chivalric code by following four critical laws within the code of chivalry, yet still struggling with his many human weaknesses throughout the course of his journey. Despite the fact that Gawain upheld most of the chivalric code, some may think that he failed to uphold the code because of human mistakes. As the story begins, the Green Knight comes inside the castle, gets his head sliced off and then is miraculously fine, and he walks out telling Sir Gawain to find him in a year and a day. This series of events exemplifies to Gawain that he, himself, is not immortal and he should fear for his own life. When Gawain finally arrives at the Knight’s castle on the dreadful day, the knight explains, â€Å" But you have lacked a little, sir; you were less that loyal;/ But since it was not the sash itself or lust/ But because you loved your life, I blame you less† (207-209). All humans have, in some way, a in fear of death. This was the feeling that overcomes Sir Gawain, causing him to keep the sash that was given to him on the third day by the mistress. This action caused Gawain to fail to uphold the chivalric code because he was disloyal to the host. No other knight would be chivalrous enough to pass up a chance to save his life; each one is human which means they ultimately fear their own death. In the end, some would consider Gawain a failure, but in logical terms it was an opportunity too difficult to pass up by any human, showing that human flaws have interfered with Gawain’s journey to uphold the chivalric code. The knight agrees with this and understands that even though Gawain should uphold the code, he has to go through some loopholes. This understanding by the Green Knight later comes about in the conversation between Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, the Knight states, â€Å"You are the finest man that ever walked this earth†¦ so Gawain indeed stands ut above all other Knights† (204-206). Even though Gawain has showed disloyalty to the Knight, or at the time his host, the Green Knight is still able to state that he is a heroic knight. Gawain is considered one of the greatest knights, because he knows that he is only making mistakes due to human flaws in his judgments, which difficult to overcome. But the Knight knows that he has the ability to reco gnize his mistakes and fix them. Overall, this shows that Gawain is trusted and trusted not to repeat his mistakes, revealing him to be chivalrous by then end of the poem. In conclusion, some may think that Gawain was not able to uphold the Chivalric code, but this is a false accusation, because he struggled due to his human flaws that would be impossible to overcome for any living being. Sir Gawain is able to uphold the chivalric code by conquering difficult tasks while following the rulebook. The Chivalric Code is a complex system that goes against many human flaws and behaviors. Gawain stays courageous, honorable and gentlemen-like through out his journey, even tough he has many battles with temptation and fear. Gawain tries with extreme patience to overcome his errors, but sometimes fails to do so, which shows that he is only human and that everyone makes mistakes but they have the ability to fix them. As Sir Gawain and The Green Knight ends, the reader concludes that even though Gawain did have some failures in meeting all of the exact laws the chivalric code, he is still able to uphold a majority the code of chivalry with prominence and pride. The wants and needs of society grow mainly because of population expansion and a growing desire for a more comfortable life. But is the U.S. only dealing with this? Beijing has been proven to be the worlds smoggiest city. The air has diminished so severely that Premier Zhu Rongii and other top leaders have made major cleanup measures. Tiny little vans called an Miandi have been one of the major causes of poor air quality. Although they call for less then 2% of the more then 1.4 million vehicles, they are the sources of 8-10% of the pollution because of their auto gases. T he other factors of pollution in Beijing are the restaurants and businesses that use coal to fuel their stoves (Beijing). However, the question is not what caused the pollution but how we will stop it. There are 2 good answers for Beijing. One is to convert the coal burning stoves into stoves that use cleaner fuels. The second is a company that is trying to crack down on pollution called Capital Steel. Capital Steel has been a long time target of environmentalists and by 2003 they plan to spend $100 million on pollution prevention (Beijing). On the other hand, in the US the Environmental Protection Agency has been enforcing air pollution standards on S.U.V.s, pickups, and mini-vans. The effects of these standards are the rising costs of motor vehicles. The EPA had estimated that these standards will increase the cost of cars on average $100 and trucks about $200 (Trucks). There is a problem however, with creating cars that give off non pollutant materials. This gasoline additive, MTBE, has seeped through into near by wells and has forced and has forced them to close. The result of this is that millions of dollars have been spent in the clean up costs( Gasoline). In conclusion, I guess you could agree with me when I say the world we live in is far from perfect. Things will be proven to be harmful and there will be ways to save us at the mere cost of millions. The reason that air pollution is important is that it shows not only the U.S. is cracking down on pollution prevention but the rest of the world is too, not to mention the hundreds of millions of dollars that are being spent because of the tragedy of the commons. In the poem â€Å"Hope is the thing with feathers† by Emily Dickinson the contrast between the struggles, or darkness in life, and the hope that brings people through those struggles is the main focus. Hope is a feeling; it is a desire that drives people through even the most nightmarish situations. It is the expectation that everything will be okay, to trust there is a possibility for a brighter outcome. Having hope is to dream and have the courage to believe this outcome is possible. Hope is the faith in powers beyond one’s control. Without hope people would simply give up when faced with struggle. Dickinson awes at hope and what it can do. In the poem hope is shown as an animate thing, a bird. The imagery of hope being a bird with feathers gives the reader an image that hope can take flight (Pottebaum). This flight can take or lift a person from the burdens they face in life (Pottebaum). These simplistic metaphors bring this short but direct tone to a meaningful message that hope lives and abides in all of us. In later years Emily Dickinson lived a somewhat isolated existence in regards to the outside world, her immediate family were those she interacted with most (Kirk). On researching about her life, she was born in 1830. She was formally educated for the time period, even attending Mount Holyoke Female Seminary in 1847. (Kirk) During her youth she seemed to have much more social interaction, but as deaths of friends and relatives began to happen, she became more reclusive (Kirk). By the 1860s, she very rarely left Amrherst , her family home (Kirk). Miss Dickinson never married and it was suggested that she may have experienced unrequited love (Kirk). This could suggest that these events of loss and isolation helped contribute to the imagery she would later use in her writings. It is the pain and loss of those we love that strikes the deepest. In giving these emotions the attributes of storms â€Å"that could abash the little bird† (7) Miss Dickinson paints an image of our lives as we face events that we cannot control. Hope is given feathers that can touch our souls and bring us out of our despair with its sweet song (Pottebaum). It also brings forth the image that hope is a delicate thing that can still sing, even during the fiercest of events (Brantley). It dwells in each of us, and this is projected in the most direct way by simply stating† that perches in the soul† (2). This statement speaks to everyman that hope resides inside the soul; but one must listen for its song. It is for this reason that I have been drawn to this poem. All of us face events and challenges that can seem overwhelming, but with hope we find a way to endure. As Miss Dickinson states we must listen and embrace this hope. Hope is in everyone, and is the light that drives people out of the darkness. It is â€Å"sweetest in the gale is heard† (5), this is saying that hope is contagious. Once it is â€Å"heard† it can be passed from one person to another. Dickinson portrays hope as a burning desire to make it through the â€Å"storm† (6). This melody of hope can carry us through difficult times without asking for a crumb. She explores the selflessness of hope. When it is not needed it waits within one. It never leaves; hope is always there to shine through the dark when one decides it is time to call upon it. Hope never asks for anything in return, â€Å"Yet, never, in extremity, It asked a crumb of me. † (11-12). Dickinson is saying that hope is the light in one’s soul; it is the good in us (Brantley). I believe this image is an encouragement to live life knowing that hope is there in the soul asking for nothing but the opportunity to sing. The description of the† chilliest lands and strangest seas† (9-10), brings forth both an interruption of the possibility of loss or as a prompt to encourage us to engage life. I see these simple words as both negative and positive. Dickinson accomplishes this theme with the use of voice. She uses short, yet powerful words to create a tone of simplicity. She intends these words to strike, to hit home. Dickinson wants these words to create an emotional experience. She wants the reader to remember all the times that hope was there for them, guided them, and helped them cross to the other side of the storm. Her wording is informal; this creates a sense of familiarity between the reader and the thing of hope (Brantley). Her tone is humbled and appreciative; she speaks as if she owes the little bird of hope a great deal. She refers to hope sweetly as if reminiscing about a fond memory. Yet, hope is not a thing that comes out in times of happiness; it appears in times of despair. It is a friend, a guiding light, or to Dickinson a little bird (Pottebaum). Whenever she has needed it, her friend has appeared for her and this she is grateful. On a simplistic view, â€Å"chilliest land† (9) can seem cold and harsh, but if you never venture and explore do you truly live? The words strangest sea could be both literal and emotional; Miss Dickinson could be exploring love or moving away from the comforts of family (Brantley). It is compelling that such simple, concise words can hold such meaning when comparing to her life or ours. These universal concepts engage us to look at our own lives and view ourselves in more simple terms. Life can be full of tribulations, it is these times we must look for the warmth and bear the sore of the storm. Miss Dickinson brings to her readers’ visual concepts in the form of the feathers implying that hope is a bird. The audible suggestion is presented in the form of the hearing and listening for the song of hope. She also in her own concise way brings in the physical feeling of cold and unfamiliar in her descriptions in the â€Å"chillest lands and strangest seas† (9-10). This writing could be read quickly and dismissed so easily if one did not take time to exam with depth and feeling, these simple words imply. These thoughts are so concise, yet universal. We all will face pain and loss at some time during our lives. It is from within ourselves, that we draw hope and strength to persevere. This image which presents hope as a feathered bird, the most fragile of things; yet it survives the storms life brings this suggests unsaid we can, also. This depth of thought can be brought forth by reading and contemplating the words carefully with introspection of one’s own challenges. Pain, loss and hope are universal; despair comes to those who stop listening for the song of hope. Hope is there but we must be open to it. Miss Dickinson was a prolific writer (Brantley). Following her death in 1886, her family found approximately 1800 poems she had placed in volumes she had carefully, and I believe, loving assembled her handwritten writings she had devoted her life to her poetry (Kirk). It is an amazing testament of her views, as shown so simply in this work, of the complicated emotions one faces in life. Dickinson chose to write this poem in a way that made you think about life. She used simplistic words that held deeper meaning with the underlying metaphors between human nature, hope, and a bird itself. Life is much this way, things seem clear on the surface but as you reach the root of things one realizes that life is much more complex. In life we face many struggles and hope is there to remind us that things will get better; it guides us much like a bird might guide a ship back to land.
