The Development Of East Africa - 989 Words

Over the last five million years, every aspect of East Africa’s landscape has undergone a peculiar change, creating a centrality of evolution in its region. Due to forces exerted by plate tectonics and a changing climate, East Africa has transformed from a depressed, arboraceous region to an alpine landscape that is strangely dominated by deep-water lakes that tend to appear and disappear consistently. According to the Huffington Post, it was from this particular area that â€Å"emerged an ape smart enough to question its own existence; (Maslin)† a clever indication that this area employed the rise of human beings. Approximately twenty million years ago, the Asian and Indian continental plates jarred into one another and impelled the Tibetan plateau to move upwards. In the midst of the heated summertime, this plateau acts â€Å"as a huge heat engine (Maslin)† as it absorbs solar energy that is later transmitted to the atmosphere; during this process, convection c urrents are created. With vast amounts of hot air rising, air from other areas are transported and sucked in, including moist amounts of air from the Indian Ocean â€Å"that produces intense South East Asian monsoons (Maslin)†. It is this transition occurring within the air that has drawn out the moisture from African and created a dry climate within the areas of its eastern regions. Not only is the climate affected by this action, but also evolution as well. The distinct split that is created between the climates of Asia andShow MoreRelatedIslam and Continuities1628 Words   |  7 Pagespresent.   Ã‚  Ã‚   Europe  Ã‚  Ã‚   Sub-Saharan Africa  Ã‚  Ã‚   the Middle East  Ã‚  Ã‚     Ã‚  Ã‚   East Asia   Ã‚  Ã‚   SE Asia  Ã‚  Ã‚     Ã‚  Ã‚     South Asia  Ã‚  Ã‚     Ã‚  Ã‚   Latin America  Ã‚  Ã‚   North America †¢Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Analyze the changes and continuities in China from the Zhou to the Song. Modern Day Policing Across America Essay - 2310 Words

After the slave patrols were created the next form of organized policing in America was in the form of police departments; the first police department was in New York during 1845, after that Chicago created one in 1854, and Los Angeles in 1869. These stations were based on three characteristics taken from their British counterparts: limited police authority meaning all actions by officers must be specifically stated/defined by the law, local control meaning the local government would control and regulate and set up some of the laws that officers must abide by, and a fragmented law enforcement authority, meaning that not only one department or office will control one district but share it with other organizations so that it will regulate within itself and not abuse power or achieve a monopoly in that area; these characteristics are present in modern day policing across America (Archbold, 2013). One of the larger problems that occurred during these early times of law enforcement was wh ether or not policemen should be armed or not, the fact that policemen should always wear a uniform when on duty, and to what extent they should use physical force in different situations; the early law enforcement ideals of sir Peele were that physical force should only be used in last case scenarios and officers should be well trained in diplomacy between in heated disagreements (Archbold, 2013). Some officers however believed that wearing uniforms would make them a target of mockery andShow MoreRelatedThe Role Of Policing During The United States Essay934 Words   |  4 Pagesfactors that contribute to today’s American policing. Identity Theft examples Essay Identity Theft In todays society, there is a white-collar crime that has greatly risen in popularity among criminals. This crime is identity theft. Hundreds of thousands of people have their identities stolen each year. Identity theft is when these criminals obtain and use consumers personal information such as credit card numbers, bank account numbers, insurance information, and social security numbers to purchase goods or services fraudulently. According to the Federal Trade Commission, over 1.1 million people were the victim of identity theft. With this number, it is very evident that identity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes in our country. This paper will attempt to more thoroughly define identity theft. It will †¦show more content†¦ As one can see, stealing someone?s identity is a very easy thing and can also be done in a number of different ways. In 1999, an unsuspecting attorney by the name of Rosalie Pugliese was a victim of identity theft. Over a six-week period, not only did the thief run up over sixty-thousand dollars worth of goods and steal credit cards, but also the thief went on to impersonate her victim. In the Post-Gazette on August 26, 1999, staff writer Cristina Rouvalis wrote, ?The fraudulent purchases trickled in at first a $2,700 bill on a First Union credit card and a $18.74 ATT cell phone bill in mid-December. Pugliese canceled both accounts which she had never even applied for and dismissed them as the work of a petty thief doing Christmas shopping on her dime.? The bills included an $8,000 cash advance at Atlantic City casinos, six thousand dollars worth of jewelry, and a seven thousand dollar Compaq laptop computer, just to name a few. This particular identity thief went above and beyond what most identity thieves do though. ?As investigators would soon discover, Puglieses evil twin didnt just steal h er name to rack up about $60,000 in debt. She stole her whole appearance, they said. She fixed her hair like Puglieses a medium-length blond cut and sometimes tied a crisp scarf .

Spanish American War Essay Example For Students

Spanish American War Essay The Spanish and American WarThe Americans were brought into The Spanish and American War on February 15,1898. The Americans came into this war because a naval boat of ours called the Maine was blown up. On that boat, 327of our sailors were killed in the explosion. With this explosion, the navy used it by having a slogan ,Remember the Maine, to get volunteers into the navy to help fight. We though that the Spanish were to blame for blowing up our ship. But, really there was something wrong with the engine which lead to the big explosion. This was not found till they lifted the ship out of the water in 1911. When this happened many newspapers journalist {yellow journalism} took advantage of the explosion and wrote whom they thought did the explosion or who did the people want it to be. One of these newspaper tycoons was William Randolph Hearst. He took great advantages of the war and stretched the truth to the extreme. He did this just to sell more newspapers and to make money. Hearst went over in his personal boat and took pictures in Cuba of poor and starving people there. He even captured a couple of the Spanish soldiers and turned them over to the Americans. America fought because we had big money in Cuba. All together we had over a $250 million dollars invested there with sugar and other materials that we did not what to be destroyed. We also had $100 million dollars invested in the tobacco plantations, and $50million in transportation. Our president at that time was William McCleain. He did not want to get in this war because he hated war. But when he did he decided to take some other thing that we need also. These things are the Philippines, Guam, and Portico for navel passages. On April 11,1898 McCleain gave a speech to congress for war, and they approved it. We will write a custom essay on Spanish American War specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now The war looked in big favor for the Spanish because they had an army of 400,000 men and we only had only 28,000 men, but this changed after congress declared war. The national guard got 1million recruits during the war, this was the highest ever. In the war there were two generals from the Civil War. These guys are William Shaft who weighed 320 pounds. He had to get a special tub and had to be hoisted up onto his horse. The other one is Joe Weeles. This man was a little forgetful. This was proven when sometimes he would yell to his troops lets go get those Yankees. There is one more very famous leader in this war. This man was the leader of the roughriders and became one of are presidents, this man is Teddy Roosevelt. Teddy was the first member of his family to be in a war, because his dad paid someone else so he didnt have to fight in the Civil War. He did this because he thought it was disrespectful to his wife that was a strong supporter of the south. America had a problem getting people to join the army because more men died of diseases then died from bullets. There was also another disadvantage, this was that our men werent trained to fight in the jungle. We also had another problem we only had normal one shot guns, bu t the Spanish had auto-mastics and could fire and kill many men before reloading. We were also stupid during the war especially in one fight that was both a victory and a defeat. This is because we we lost 17,000 men, but still won the fight. This battle was a slow up hill march to a fort. This battle, which is refereed to as a death march. Another big victory was won by are navy. This victory was when our navy destroyed all the Spanish ships that were trying to escape. In that battle we killed 400 of their sailors and captured 1700 others. Yet we only lost one men in this battle. .u6d54b08698bd88a2db12d83ae64ce08a , .u6d54b08698bd88a2db12d83ae64ce08a .postImageUrl , .u6d54b08698bd88a2db12d83ae64ce08a .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u6d54b08698bd88a2db12d83ae64ce08a , .u6d54b08698bd88a2db12d83ae64ce08a:hover , .u6d54b08698bd88a2db12d83ae64ce08a:visited , .u6d54b08698bd88a2db12d83ae64ce08a:active { border:0!important; } .u6d54b08698bd88a2db12d83ae64ce08a .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u6d54b08698bd88a2db12d83ae64ce08a { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u6d54b08698bd88a2db12d83ae64ce08a:active , .u6d54b08698bd88a2db12d83ae64ce08a:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u6d54b08698bd88a2db12d83ae64ce08a .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u6d54b08698bd88a2db12d83ae64ce08a .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u6d54b08698bd88a2db12d83ae64ce08a .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u6d54b08698bd88a2db12d83ae64ce08a .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u6d54b08698bd88a2db12d83ae64ce08a:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u6d54b08698bd88a2db12d83ae64ce08a .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u6d54b08698bd88a2db12d83ae64ce08a .u6d54b08698bd88a2db12d83ae64ce08a-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u6d54b08698bd88a2db12d83ae64ce08a:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The Glassmenagerie 1st Draft Essay On July 17,1898 we marched in to the their capital and nothing stop us from taking it over, but we had lost over 25% of are men to

The History of Vending Machines

The History of Vending Machines Vending or automatic retailing, as the process of selling merchandise via automated machine is increasingly known, has a long history. The first recorded example of the vending machine comes from the Greek mathematician Hero of Alexandria, who  invented a device that dispensed  holy water inside Egyptian temples.   Other early examples include small machines made of brass that dispensed tobacco, were found in  some taverns in England around  1615.  In 1822, an English  publisher and bookshop owner named  Richard Carlile built a newspaper dispensing machine  that allowed patrons to purchase banned works. And it was in  1867 that the first fully automatic vending machine, which  dispensed  stamps, appeared.   Coin-Operated Vending Machines During the early 1880s, the first commercial coin-operated vending machines were introduced in London, England. Invented in 1883 by  Percival Everitt, the machines were found at railway stations and  post offices, as they were a convenient way to purchase  envelopes,  postcards, and  notepaper. And in 1887, the first vending machine servicer, the  Sweetmeat Automatic Delivery Company, was founded.   In 1888, the Thomas Adams Gum Company introduced the very first vending machines to the United States. The machines were installed on the elevated subway platforms in New York City and sold Tutti-Fruiti gum. In 1897, the Pulver Manufacturing Company added animated figures to its gum machines as an added attraction. The round, candy-coated gumball, and gumball vending machines were introduced in 1907. Coin-Operated Restaurants Soon, vending machines were available that offered almost everything, including cigars, postcards, and stamps. In Philadelphia, a completely coin-operated automat restaurant called Horn Hardart was opened in 1902 and stayed opened until 1962. Such fast-food restaurants, called automats, only took nickels and were popular among struggling  songwriters and  actors, as well as celebrities of that era.   Beverage Vending Machines Machines that dispensed drinks go as far back as 1890. The very first beverage vending machine was located in Paris, France and allowed people to buy beer wine and liquor. In the early 1920s, the first automatic vending machines started dispensing  sodas  into cups. Today, beverages are among the most popular items sold through vending machines.   Cigarettes in Vending Machines In 1926, an American inventor named William Rowe invented the cigarette vending machine. Over time, however, they became increasingly less common in the United States due to concerns over underage buyers. In other countries, vendors have addressed the issue by requiring that some sort of age verification, such as a drivers license, bank card or ID be inserted before a purchase can be made. Cigarette dispensing machines are still common in  Germany, Austria, Italy, the Czech Republic, and Japan.   Specialty Vending Machines Food, beverages, and cigarettes are the most common items sold in vending machines, but the list of specialty items sold by this form of automation is almost endless, as a quick survey of any airport or bus terminal will tell you. The vending machine industry took a big jump around 2006 when credit card scanners started to become common on vending machines. Within ten years, almost every new vending machine was equipped to accept credit cards. This opened the door to the sale of many high-priced items through vending machines. Here are just some of the specialty products that have been offered via vending machine:   Fishing baitOn-line internet timeLottery ticketsBooksElectronics, including I-pads,  cell phones, digital cameras, and computers.  Hot foods, such as french fries and pizzaLife insuranceCondoms and other contraceptivesOver-the-counter drugsMarijuanaAutomobiles Yes, you read that last item correctly.  In late 2016, Autobahn Motors in Singapore opened a luxury car vending machine that offered Ferrari  and  Lamborghini  cars. Buyers clearly need hefty limits on their credit cards.   Japan, Land of the Vending Machines Japan has gained a reputation for having some of the most innovative use of vending machines, offering machines that offer products including fresh fruits and vegetables, sake, hot foods, batteries, flowers, clothing and, of course, sushi. In fact, Japan has the highest per capita rate of vending machines in the world.   The Future of Vending Machines A coming trend is the advent of smart vending machines that offer things like cashless payment; face, eye, or fingerprint recognition,  and social media connectivity. It is likely that the vending machines of the future will recognize your identity and tailor their offerings to your interests and tastes. A beverage vending machine, for example, may well recognize what you have purchased at other vending machines all around the world and ask you if you want your usual skim latte with a double shot of vanilla.   Market research projects that by 2020, 20% of all vending machines will be smart machines, with at least 3.6 million units knowing who you are and what youd like.

Inovations in Automotive Electronics Research Paper

Inovations in Automotive Electronics - Research Paper Example Other remarkable developments have been the GPS, all-wheel drive, and airbags among others. No doubt, man has made revolutionary innovation over the past decades that have made life easier, convenient, and better. For instance, the automobiles industry has made some amazing progress following their invention in the early 19th century. One of the key factors that have helped automobiles give more security and accommodation, however, is automobile electronics. Automotive electronics are systems found in the vehicle and generated electronically. Such systems include telematics and entertainment systems among other structures. These systems are so many and thus grouped into several categories with regard to their functions, namely, entertainment systems, active safety, driver assistance, engine electronics, passenger comfort, chassis electronics, and transmission electronics. With the advances in electronics innovation, auto producers have possessed the capacity to offer a broad mixture of administrations and accommodations that numerous new car proprietors appreciate (Mitchel l, Borroni-Bird, & Burns, 2010). Automobile electronics have been applied to various car improvements such as the Electronic Fuel Injection to the well-known Global Positioning System (Craughwell, 2012). Driving is more fun and safer than it used to be a hundred years ago since the invention of the automobile. This paper outlines some of the developments that have enhanced the use of automobiles. One of the best developments in automobile electronics innovation is the Electronic Fuel Injection/infusion or EFI for short. This gadget takes the spot of the ordinary carburetor that has been in use since the invention of the motor. The employment of the carburetor was regularly the piece of the motor that serves to dissipate fuel so that it blends with the air for burning. This gives energy to the barrels that help the motor work. A gliding gadget inside of

Talent Management In Abu Dhabi Aircraft Technologies (ADAT) Dissertation

Talent Management In Abu Dhabi Aircraft Technologies (ADAT) - Dissertation Example The research found that ADAT uses Talent Management, but the process is in a nascent stage where the understanding and awareness about it is extremely low, especially among the interviewed employees. ADAT has introduced several initiatives toward Talent Management which included developing the Centre of Excellence for Recruitment and Oracle Performance Management, but the organization appears to lack in an integrated and streamlined approach toward Talent Management. Moreover, the focus of the organization was revealed to be on recruiting external talent for its critical positions, which in turn led to employee dissatisfaction and demotivation – thus defeating the very purpose of Talent Management. The research recommends that ADAT develop a comprehensive framework for Talent Management that takes into account organizational structure and job positions, business goals and future prospects, and employee relations into account. African American Literature Essay Example for Free

African American Literature Essay African American literature has a strong deeply rooted background in the history of America, thus giving the writers categorized in this genre a strong message to convey in any story they chose to tell. From tragic life moments to happy life moments, the writers have the ability to tell their story in a variety of methods. This canon of literature serves as a diary for the African American community. All of the literary works that compile this genre reflect the many twists and turns a collective group of persons must endure while struggling to achieve a place in history. The following discussion of three historically significant African American stories reflects the struggles one race of persons had to endure on their journey throughout various time periods in America. The Short Stories In the short story, My White Folks Treated us Good by Mariah Hines the author describes in first person account of a situation when African American slaves were treated well in comparison to the stories of abuse, rape, and neglect most persons are accustom to reading from this era. The slaves never went hungry, always had clothes to wear, were able to work under their own accord, always treated with respect, and were told to take Sundays off while also being encouraged to attend church on Sundays. The slaves were in fact treated so well that when they were free to leave, they choose to remain at their former master’s farm and continued working for him. Hines concluded the Master continued to support his former slaves. Hines stated â€Å"Master helped us much as he could. Some of us he gave a cow or mule or anything he could spare to help us (p. 34). † Moving forward in time, the short story Sweat by Zora Neale Hurston describes a situation of domestic abuse in a long term relationship between a wife, Delia Jones, and her husband, Sykes Jones. Sykes enjoyed torturing Delia, he would find ways to make her job as a washwoman more difficult by kicking the clothes across the room or by scaring her with ways related to her fear of snakes. Sykes enjoyed fighting; he in fact enjoyed it so much so that he intentionally picked fights with Delia. This type of torture strained their marriage to the point of near silence on a daily basis. Sykes thought it to be a good idea to bring a rattlesnake into their home. The rattlesnake got lose in the home, Delia was able to get outside the home but Sykes remained in the home and was attacked in their bedroom. Sykes yelled to Delia for help and comfort, but she was unable to come to him related to fear. Delia finally walked to the door, but due to the nature of his injuries and the distance to the doctor she understood he would not make it through this attack, therefore she allowed him to pass in their backyard. â€Å"She could scarcely reach the chinaberry tree, where she waited in the growing heat while inside she knew the cold river was creeping up and up to extinguish that eye which much known by now that she knew (p. 108). † This story shows how those who choose to abuse others always pay for those actions in the end. Alice Walker wrote the story Nineteen Fifty-Five, about a young white singer, Traynor, who purchased a song from a young African American woman, Gracie Mae, and went on to become famous after recording and releasing his own version. His version of Gracie Mae’s song continued to eat away at Gracie Mae for the rest of her life. It did not have the same meaning, nor was it loved by his fans for the same reasons she hoped it would be. The fans loved Traynor, not the song. Traynor continued to keep in contact with Gracie Mae throughout his time in the army, touring, marriages, and divorces. Then towards after many years, contact stopped and Traynor was found dead after 15 wives and a troubled road in the end. Gracie Mae lived vicariously through Traynor and his portrayal of her song. Gracie Mae herself lived quite happily through the birth of many children, the divorce and/or death of three husbands, the showering of gifts from Traynor, and his ultimate death. Gracie Mae did have a connection to Traynor that flowed deeper than her song. â€Å"One night I dreamed Traynor has split up with his fifteenth wife p. 297). † Due to the stereotypes and prejudices of this time period Gracie Mae and Traynor were never able to express the emotional connection they felt between each other. Common Literary Conventions Literary conventions and themes were similar in the stories; connotations, culture, undertones, and main characters were alike. The three stories were written in first person and portrayed a personal struggle endured by each main character. The main character was always female, strong, and independent in different way. The stories span three different periods of time, yet still reflecting similar struggles in very different settings. These conventions are important when connecting the messages of these stories. Each has a story of struggle, some are internal while others are outward, and each woman must find inner strength to change or cope with their situations. Beginning with My White Folks Treated us Good, this story was historically important in relation to conveying the happiness that could be found in such a dire situation as slavery. Hines showed not all slavery conditions were adverse or abusive; there was still the possibility of enjoying life, and gaining independence by getting the break needed, such as the freeing of all slaves, to make one’s own life better. In Sweat, Hurstson was able write a story about a woman able to persevere in a dreadful situation of both mental and physical abuse. During this time in history, women were not able to be independent and outspoken due to a fear of judgment or increased abuse. Delia was given the chance to be free from the abuses of Sykes and took that chance by allowing him to die from his injuries, thus resulting in her freedom. Following in the same suit, Nineteen Fifty-Five expressed the internal struggle of a woman’s desire to be understood and independent. Gracie Mae wanted to sing her own song and live her own life, without connection to a version of her song that did not represent the original intent. Gracie Mae was happy with her life, but was never free from what the release of her song brought to her life. Conclusion Culturally, these stories are important to all American’s. The historical significance of these stories and the emphasis on equality places a connotation of acceptance and availability of equal opportunity to all persons regardless of color, social class, age, race, gender, or personal situation. African Americans are able to tell their personal stories of struggles and triumphs through literature. This literature is a valuable tool for all persons wanting to educate themselves about significant times in American history. References Young, A. (1996). Aristotle: Above the Mean :: essays research papers fc

Aristotle: Above the Mean   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  With the strict oppression of thought by religion and government in the 2nd century B.C.E., it’s a surprise in itself that Aristotle, a man with such revolutionary thoughts and ideas was able to let his thinking be known to the entire world (as it was known back then). It is therefore even more surprising that his idea’s have survived these many centuries though books, a medium of writing that has a notorious reputation of being burned when something in its contents doesn’t match the current beliefs of the established system of government or the church. We can certainly all be thankful that his idea’s have survived thus far because of the tremendous impact that they have had on thought, government, and the way of life throughout the entire world in general. Aristotle was a revolutionary thinker whose ideas have no rival from anyone in his own school of thought.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  In book Two of Aristotle’s Nichomachean Ethics, Aristotle lets out arguably some of his best work. The idea that in life, people shouldn’t strive to be the best, but instead aim for the middle, or the mean as Aristotle calls it, was something new and innovative not only then, but even to some people today. He further backs his assumption up by supplying more than enough examples. To start out, Aristotle first defines what is â€Å"good† and what is â€Å"bad†. He does this by providing examples of several things that have both a good side along with a bad side. One example he gives is lawmakers. A lawmaker can have a positive effect on society or a negative one. Judging by the effect his laws have on the people, he is then determined to be either a bad lawmaker or a good one. Moreover, the lawmakers themselves have the power of making people into either good or bad citizens. This is done by instilling either good or bad habits into the citizens through the legislation that the lawmakers pass (Pg. 99). This once again, in turn, dictates whether the lawmakers themselves are good or bad lawmakers. Aristotle’s idea of this is (to use a clichà ©) is â€Å"Right on the money†. Even in today’s world, people are judged by their actions. That is to say, if someone does something good in their life, they are considered a good person, conversely, if a person is known for a failure, the people around them regard that person as a failure; or as Aristotle would simply put it, â€Å"bad†.

Cooperative Strategy

Critically discuss the underlying motivations and associated competitive advantages that explain why MNEs enter into cooperative structures and strategies, using examples. In recent years there has been an upsurge in the number of MNEs entering cooperative structures and strategies. According to Jones cooperative structure is a means of a substitute or complementary to multinational strategies. It is a strategy in which firms work together to achieve shared objectives. They form partnerships once they believe a local firm had the competitive advantage in the industry or engaged in contractual agreements with public firms.Cooperative strategies and structures have become larger and more complex and crucial more central to the core strategies and competitive advantages of participating firms as a response to the pressures of competing in a global market. In this essay I will firstly discuss the underlying factors which forces MNEs to partake in cooperative strategies. I will then menti on the different types of cooperative structures and strategies. Thirdly using examples I will discuss the motives and disadvantages which arise from MNEs entering into cooperative structure and strategies. After which I will close of with some points to consider in building a successfully cooperative strategies. Cooperative structure and strategy was first coined by firm pre World War 1. In the international business environment in the 21st century there are very few companies which possess all the resources or capabilities they need to develop strategies and organizational capabilities to gain competitive advantage on their own. Firms in the European nations were free to engage in cooperation. The US firms were bound by legislation which causes them not to be free to collaborate.According to Bartlett et al. the key challenge facing companies is their ability to maintain independence by maintaining firm control over its activities which led to the building of strong external relatio nships which may be with their customers, suppliers, competitors or even other institutions. Factors which trigger firms to shift towards cooperative strategy and structures (cooperation) stems from rising cost in R&D, shortened life cycle due to constant technological evolution, growing barriers to market entry (where some firms may lack the now-how), capital shortage, increasing needs for global scale economies and expanding importance of global standards as the world have now become a global market with greater demands and competition being placed on firms. Increasingly they must collaborate with others to meet the need of the global environment. Firms may undertake co-operation such as strategic alliances in this type of cooperation the participating firms agree to collaborate specific aspects of their business combining some of their resources and capabilities to create a mutual competitive advantage.Another form of cooperation is joint ventures which is the most formal mode of cooperation. It involves two or more participating firms taking joint equity in separate entities distinct from the parent company. It may take the form of an entirely new enterprise or one that the joint venture come together and acquire. Eg Fuji-Xerox. During the interwar years the sharing of risk and reduction of financial pressure was the basis for joint ventures, cartels and collaborations.Licensing and Franchising are also forms of cooperation they are contractual relationships between firms they offer ways of reducing capital necessary to engaging in international business. Networks as cooperation are found in many different industries and take many different forms they have no formal existence and are rooted in sustained ongoing commercial relationships where partners have learnt to trust and rely on one another. They exist to link forms operating in different stages of the value chain. All these are different forms in which a firm may undertake to acquire the skills and res ources they lack all in effort of creating value. MNEs engaging in cooperation can benefit from a range of motives giving them competitive advantage over the competitor or sustainability. Such advantages/motives are learning and resource transfer this is where the cooperative structure formal informal networks through licensing agreement to formal joint venture which can form conduits for information flows, knowledge and other tangible and intangible resources. This means that cooperation become a route through which firms gain access to resources they do not possess and either cannot or do not wish to do develop internally. This is because more and more firms are now focusing on narrow sets of core capabilities and innovation (R&D) depends on interdisciplinary work. Firms narrowing their capabilities forces firms to look at external sources of competencies and resource that they no longer possess internally. Example: The requirements imply that todays MNEs must develop the skills t o not only manage assets and resources under their

International business climate Essay

There are various factors which are used in measuring the business climate of a nation and also globally. Some of these factors are energy costs, business income tax levels, market size, life’s quality, infrastructure, incentives, workforce availability and others. Globally, the investors are known to monitor the share prices of most business corporations in order to make an informed business on the companies or the market to invest in. According to Guy (2009)and Katsioloudes&Hadjidakis, (2007), business climate globally has been quite harsh on the investors. Some of the business rules in most countries are not conducive for the business climate. These are rules that are quite unstable, disloyal and the corruption is completely out of hand. During crisis, investors usually sell the shares that belong to the entire business in order to avoid losses. This hence affects the entire business adversely. According to the literature review that has been conducted on the international business climate, most multinational companies enjoy relationships and hence have merged in order to ensure competition. Most countries have a vast set of regulations and laws that do affect business operations. As Kirpalani (p. 114) asserts a country like the UK has very active monopoly policies. The monopoly commission plays a very vital role as far as mergers and takeovers are concerned. The UK law does permit the mergers commission and monopolies to investigate, block and delay all the proposed mergers that are not of public interest. Social factors also have a major influence on global business climate. Communities on global business climate are very keen on the way the company does utilize their income in order to support local people as far as destination economies are concerned. Their main interest is to see the local people engage in the foreign companies. They do expect all the multinational companies to be involved in some social activities for example helping the poor people. International business climate are also involved in conserving the environment as every business is going green. There are various government policies that do affect business activities. To ensure that there are low levels of pollution, governments should also establish those policies for example emissions standards. The political environment has set various laws and has aimed at reducing the corporate taxes in order to encourage some of the foreign investments in Africa and Asia (Scaffer et al, 2008). Most of the economies in the global international climate have also invested in effective communication facilities to enable business transactions. If we have to involve the issue of Switzerland in the international business climate we acknowledge the fact that just as the international climate has incorporated economic, cultural, legal as well as political issues so has Switzerland. One of the reasons that make Switzerland cope and suit in the international business climate is the fact that its legal climate is quite transparent and has regulations that are not discriminative. It has a legal system that governs the local and international business activities and stops anti- competitive behavior. Its political climate is effective and very stable. If we are to compare the international climate with that of Switzerland, it is patent that Switzerland’s international climate is better. Therefore, with that in mind there ought to be some recommendations for the international business climate. Switzerland happens to be one of the leading countries globally when it comes to the IT infrastructure. Some of the factors that do work in its favor comprise of issues like security, telecoms competition and government support. The official currency of Switzerland has remained to be Swiss Franc (CHF). It is one of the currencies that has always been used in the country and is quite strong as well as stable over many years. It is convertible and is not controlled by the government. It also has one of the best banking sectors in Switzerland and one of the biggest commercial bank. The communication systems in Swiss are vast and quite modern. Its domestic system comprises of an extensive cable as well as a microwave network. It has the best reputation when it comes to transportation as it has the most efficient and extensive public transportation globally. Its economy is the best and all the Swiss citizens are entitled to education. For those who are financially deprived, the government is responsible for paying their meals, transportation, books and other amenities. The citizens are free from other foreign country and are only subject to the laws of their country. Since it is not part of EU and UN, the government is also free from the outside regulations. Its tri level system of politics is effective since the country and state bodies are usually granted high control levels. The collegial system of Federal council contributes highly to its political stability. Switzerland economy is so effective and has mounted to be the global leading public and medical health infrastructures. It tops the list of all European countries despite the fact it is not a member of EU. As compared to the international business climate, culturally, there main priority has been protection of the environment. Their regulation standards are quite high and efficient making the industry grow at high rates. It is one of the vast and major exporters of both goods and services and a big supplier within Europe after Japan and USA. The climate of Switzerland is definitely what can be termed as pro business. Just like the international climate, it has also adopted a legislative act that promotes economic attractiveness for all businesses. It has created a wonderful appealing economy for business. They also have an advantage of a having high standards of production. Switzerland was ranked by the World Economic Global Competitiveness Report as the global’s most competitive economy (Ina, 2010). It has a sound environment, infrastructure, efficient market and a high technological innovation. The major laws that govern the foreign investment are the Swiss Code of obligations, Securities Law, Cartel Law and Lex Friedrich. Recommendations for International Business climate The international business climate is yet to be what can be termed as perfect. It is therefore the duty of each nation to make sure that everything is running smoothly. In most third world countries, the investors are always at risk. There ought to be firm laws governing each country and protecting businesses from being affected by inflation. Just like in Switzerland, nations need to improve on their efficiency, security and laws in order to have an appealing business climate. The political climate should also be enhanced into one that can accommodate business effectively. It is the duty of the legal system to make sure all social evils are cubed for example corruption in order for businesses to survive. There should be a strong relationship with other foreign countries in order for international trade to survive. Other laws should be introduced whose measures should include tax breaks as well as investment credits for the small companies. There should be strict safety environmental regulations and the government should also offer subsidies and a wonderful climate for businesses. Conclusion Though the international business climate is so much like that of Switzerland, Switzerland has one of the best business climates that are quite appealing. The international business climate should emulate Switzerland and aim to make their climate appealing. This can be done through adoption of laws that protect businesses, unification of all those who are concerned and eradication of all social evils like corruption.

Critique on the film essays

Critique on the film essays Today, many Americans take the fact that we have food, education, transportation, clothing, jobs, and doctors to fix our physical ailments for granted. Nobody can really appreciate life until they witness the hardships and tragedies of another. In the Chinese film To Live, tragedy, suffering, and poverty are all depicted throughout the movie, but tied in with wisdom, love, and determination. Nothing is so bad that you cant go on, and this is shown all the way through the entire production. Fugui and his wife Jiazhen struggle through life just by doing everyday things Americans wouldnt think about today. Fugui and Jiazhen are a married couple that dont let poverty get in the way of their happiness. No matter what happens, they always go on. Fugui is a man who liked to gamble but soon realized that putting family first is a top priority. Jiazhen is a kind, caring mother and a loving wife. She is mainly the person who keeps Fugui straight through the hard times in the movie. I give them credit for such a dedication to optimism. For example, they became very broke, but they were glad. They wanted to be poor townspeople. Jiazhen suffered from a temporary loss of her husband when he went to war, but with a positive attitude begun to raise Youquing on her own until Fugui returned. Both Jiazhen and Fugui suffered in the great loss of losing their son, Youquing in a dreadful accident at school, getting run over by a car. They had also suffered in losing their daug hter, Fengxia from giving birth, but showed such great hopefulness that they found their lives to be back on track in no time. Jiazhen and Fugui loved their children greatly. This made it easy for them to have such big hearts. Fengxia, their daughter experienced her share of hardships, also. She had permanently lost her voice from a horrible sickness as a child, witnessed her brother dying, and when giving birth, she fought for her last livin...

Security consultant Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Security consultant - Essay Example Secondly, this assessment forms the basis upon which these risks, threats, and vulnerabilities are prioritized in accordance with criticality. Remediation of the identified risks and vulnerabilities can then be effectively budgeted. Also, it is from this risk assessment that compliancy with new IT security laws and regulations can be achieved to avoid legal issues. Essentially, a properly conducted risk assessment offers a basis through which the company may roll out a set of procedures aimed at protecting company’s assets, which for this case include hardware, software, and critical information. The scope describes what is covered and what is not covered in the assessment by identification of the needs to be protected, sensitivity of the information protected, and the extent of the protection. Defining the scope of network security assessment is important as it forms the basis of understanding the budget and level of security defined by the policies of the company. Understandably, the scope is a factor of criticality of information that a company has or seeks to protect from damage, manipulation, or malicious disclosure to the public. Areas covered include type of operating systems in used in the computers, access control permissions, port scanning, wireless leakage, firewall testing, intrusion detection testing, and service pack levels. A thorough assessment of these areas identifies the loopholes through which company’s critical information may be compromised. The aim is to proactively protect these areas from malicious attacks or access. OCTAVE (Operationally Critical Threat, Asset, and Vulnerability Evaluation) is a commonly used methodology for strategic assessment and planning of network security risks. The OCTAVE methodology is a technique used to analyze a company’s information security requirements. OCTAVE Allegro is the latest development and is widely used by the CERT Division. While older versions, which are
